ABSTRACT Lake Nova (15.5 km2) is the second largest lake in the Lower Doce River Valley (Southeastern Brazil). A better understanding of ecosystem structure and functioning requires knowledge about lake morphometry, given that lake basin form influences water column stratification. The present study aims to contribute to the understanding of relationship between morphometry and mixing patterns of deep tropical lakes in Brazil. Water column profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen were taken on four sampling sites along the lake major axis during 2011, 2012 and 2013. Phytoplankton diversity in the middle Rio Doce lake system of southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica

This study presents results of the inventory of algal flora conducted between August 2007 and May 2008 in 18 lakes of the middle Rio Doce lake system, most of which is in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We recorded 481 taxa, increasing the known total phytoplankton diversity of the region (gamma diversity) by 80%. The following classes were represented: Zygnematophyceae (171 taxa), Cyanobacteria (101), Chlorophyceae (71), Bacillariophyceae (42), Euglenophyceae (43), Trebouxiophyceae (24), Dinophyceae (8), Xanthophyceae (8), Chrysophyceae (6), Cryptophyceae (6) and Oedogoniophyceae (1). The abundance, biomass and composition of pelagic ciliates in East African lakes of different salinity and trophy OceanDocs

Planktonic ciliates were studied in 17 tropical East African lakes of different salinity and trophic status. Oligotrichs (e.g., Strombidium, Strobilidium and Halteria) and scuticociliates (e.g., Cyclidium, Pleuronema, Cristigera), dominated the ciliate communities. Conductivity and trophic status were the most important environmental variables influencing the distribution of ciliate species in East African lakes. Herbivorous oligotrichs were important in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, as they are in temperate and subtropical lakes, but their importance decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration and conductivity. The invertebrate's community in adjacent Alto Iguaçu's anthropic lakes of different environmental factors Biota Neotropica

Environmental differences occur between lentic and lotic communities' establishment, especially because of water time residence. Here we used a combination of field measurements and statistical analysis to evaluate the influent factors on the aquatic macroinvertebrates' composition and structure in 15 anthropogenic lakes from Alto Iguaçu's region. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from the marginal vegetation (with or without macrophytes) and sediment. Chemical parameters ranged among the anthropogenic lakes, mainly those which are connected to the Iguaçu River, beyond the presence or absence of macrophytes, interfering on the community's structure.
